JNU students attacked by ‘Masked Goons’: JNUSU president accuses ABVP ILW Legal Article Mon, Jan 06, 2020, at ,01:40 PM On the evening of 05/01/2020, a clash took place during a public meeting organized by the JNU Teachers' Association. As per the reports, some masked men charged on the students of Jawaharlal Nehru University students. More than 30 students were seriously injured and rushed to the hospital. The assault by 50-70 thugs began around 7 pm and soon escalated beyond control, prompting the university administration to call in the police. JNU Student Union issued a statement stating that the students were attacked by ABVP goons, the masked goons attacked them with sticks, rods hammers and brick pieces. The goons were roaming and beating up students inside campus and forcing them to chant ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union (JNUSU) President Aishe Ghosh at JNU said that ‘I have been brutally attacked by goons wearing masks. I have been bleeding. I was brutally beaten up.’ JNUSU general secretary Satish Chandra also injured in the attack. Left groups and ABVP blamed each other for the violence even as Union home minister Amit Shah ordered a joint CP-level inquiry and asked for a report as soon as possible. 18 people from Jawaharlal Nehru University have come to AIIMS Trauma Centre with complaints of bleeding in the head, abrasions among others. Investigations are underway: AIIMS JNU administration by issuing a press note stated that there was some disturbance in the JNU campus from pat 2-3 days regarding the registration for the new semester. Some students who were opposing the new fee reforms were hampering the registration process by using force. The complaints were made to the police regarding the incidents. On the evening of 5th, some students entered the Periyar and Sabarmati Hostel rooms and beaten up students and security guards. Uttar Pradesh has been put on high alert after the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in the national capital witnessed a night of unprecedented violence. Protests were already taking place in the state over the killing of Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani and also the attack on Nankana Saheb Gurudwara in Pakistan. Resentment over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is also yet to die down completely. I would like to appeal to all students to maintain peace. University stands by all the students to facilitate their pursuit of academic activities.
